What is the Salary of an Independent Trader?
With the steady decline in rates remunerating bank savings products, more and more French people are turning to the stock market, whose products can prove to be infinitely more profitable. But trading, How much does it earn? It's a legitimate question, because trading can allow you to make your savings profitable, supplement your income, or even... You can earn a living if you decide to trade on your own account and know how to do it well.
Un independent trader in France can earn his living through the stock market transactions he carries out.
But before looking at the salary of a trader, we must first clarify an important fact: trading is a risky activity. Only traders who achieve profitability in their operations can have a salary. Only 10-35% of traders manage to be in this bracket.
The remuneration of a trader will then depend on several factors. But we will only dwell here on two elements to predict the monthly salary of a trader.
Salary of a Private Trader According to Invested Capital
The specificity of the independent trader is that he bets his own money. He cannot therefore benefit from a salary as guaranteed income. Only his performance ultimately determines the trader's salary. This performance is measured by the return on investment or ROI (Return On Investment): the ratio between the gains made and the capital invested, over a certain period.
In general, not all independent traders are in the same boat:
- The observable ROI for the majority of traders (average level of expertise) is between 15% and 25%.
- An above-average trader can achieve an ROI of 30% or even 50%.
- The elite of traders can approach 100% ROI.
Concretely, this ROI applies to your capital to determine your income. If you have an ROI of 30% and a capital of 1 euros, then you earn 000 euros (300 x 1%). If you have an ROI of 000% with a capital of 30 euros, you earn 15 euros. We therefore see the It is necessary to put in a fairly large amount of capital at the start.
In addition, regardless of the initial volume of funds, it is advisable to Don't withdraw your initial earnings immediately. This allows you to increase your capital, and in the medium term, your gains will grow more rapidly.
In France, it is estimated that the average salary of an independent trader who devotes an average of 5 hours a day to trading is between between 2,000 and 3,000 euros per month with a capital of 10,000 euros.

Proprietary Trader Salary by Strategy Type
Apart from the levels of expertise, the salary of the particular trader is also influenced by the type of strategy implemented. There are two main options here:
Short Term Strategies
They are the ones based on the Speculation. The trader follows trends and tries to profit from them. With short-term strategies like day trading or scalping, the general approach is, after analysis, to buy an asset at the lowest price, anticipating an upcoming increase in its value. Then, the trader waits for the right moment to sell it and thus maximize the profit, with the holding period not exceeding one day.
Either way, short-term trading strategies are the most risky, but also the most profitable. SO, How much does a day trader earn? Well, the salary of a day trader or scalper can reach 30% of the capital invested, or even more depending on the level of experience and time spent trading.
Medium and Long Term Strategies
By opting for a trading strategy on a long-term horizon, we are less interested in speculation. Emphasis is placed on building an asset portfolio that allows the generation of relatively passive income over the medium term. THE The risk is quite low, as is the ROI or return on investment.
So how much does a stock market investor or swing trader (swing trading to lead to holding an asset for several months) earn? The average return with long-term strategies isapproximately 10% of the invested capital, with the avantage that this return is generally regular each month when investing in the right assets. The most profitable traders will achieve 25% return, this last percentage being difficult to exceed.
The Wealthiest Individual Traders
It is quite possible to become a young millionaire trader. Even if they are only a small elite, some traders have been able, thanks to their investments and their discipline, to become among the wealthiest people on the planet, with incomes well beyond the salary of a trader. a Swiss banker or a Goldman Sachs trader.
Here are the fortunes of the wealthiest retail traders:
Warren Buffet
He is the 3e richest man in the world. He has a fortune valued at approximately $101 billion. The man known today as the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway built his fortune through investments in company shares and sometimes in the currencies. He is known for his great prudence and wisdom. These qualities were demonstrated during two crises: the bursting of the dot-com bubble and the subprime mortgage crisis. Warren Buffett did not invest in either type of security that fueled these speculative bubbles. He is considered one of the greatest investors of the 20th century.e century.
George Soros
This American billionaire of Hungarian origin is one of the most famous traders in history. Even if he is better known today for his political activism, he is the author of one of the biggest blows made on the foreign exchange market. In 1992, he took a short position against the pound sterling and managed to pocket nearly $1 billion to the collapse of its value.
Paul Jones Tudor
This is the 7e richest hedge fund manager in the world. This XNUMX-year-old is one of the richest traders in the world with a A fortune of $5,1 billion. This is an example of the determination and perseverance needed to earn a good salary as a trader. He began his career at 22 as a clerk on a trading floor. John Paulson

He sells subprime mortgages short and cashes in more than $3,7 billion in 2007. In 2010, it racked up record revenues for the year with $5 billion in earnings.
Can you make a living from online trading for your own account?
It is not said that by trading for your own account online you will be able to generate an income close to the salary of a Jérôme Kerviel or a Warren Buffet. But the question of whether one can earn a living with this activity arises.
Indeed, trading, thanks in particular to the cinema, enjoys a certain aura: we see in it a profession that automatically leads to fortune. But the reality is quite different, the salary of a home trader online is not that of a Wolf of Wall Street nor close to the salary of a big bank trader.
Trading is a risky activity, but also a very profitable one. The majority of people who have had to invest in the stock market have lost their money. But there are hundreds of French people who live off a good salary as independent traders in Paris or elsewhere. To achieve this, there is indeed a logical process and prerequisites to fulfill.
Even if you have very successful strategies, your stock market gains are always proportional to the capital invested, all other things being equal. If you start with a small budget, it will take you many years of reinvestment to reach a suitable level of capital. On average a capital €10,000 to €15,000 is needed to get off to a good start and have the possibility of earning a high trader's salary, regardless of the strategy or sector you favor as a private trader: high-frequency trading, Forex trading, binary options, commodity trading, etc.
In view of the risk represented by stock market activity, you must invest an amount that you are able to lose without being completely ruined.
Additionally, you must also You should have savings to cover your expenses for about a year before fully committing to online proprietary trading. You need to dedicate the same number of hours to it as you would to a salaried job to become successful, which is why it's essential to have this safety net in place.
Beginnings are not always easy, and you have to You need to be able to endure the first few weeks or months, which aren't always very profitable. Proprietary trading requires experience and training to make a living from it. You must therefore invest a lot of time in education, as trading and stock market investments demand advanced knowledge of financial markets.
Finally, you have to think carefully before starting, and be reassured that you have the financial means and the patience to acquire knowledge and experience.
What is the Income of Bank Traders?
The iconic figure of the trader is that of someone who works in an investment bank. It is often this type of trader who is shown in films about the financial markets or on the front pages of the newspapers.
Even if there are independent traders who act on the markets, it is the traders of the banks and those of the investment companies who make the stock market live. The financial institutions they work for hold the largest volumes of funds. Thus the salaries of traders in investment banks are among the most interesting in the world of finance.
The remuneration or salary of the bank trader depends on his performance, of its seniority and of the Geographical location of the bank that employs him. The The salary of junior traders – those new to the profession – is generally understood to be between €4,000 and €6,000 per month. But a trader's salary rises rapidly. Proof of this is that the average salary of a bank trader is 70,000 euros per year. This fixed salary is supplemented by bonuses or bonuses that may exceed 8 times the previous base salary.

UBS Trader Salary
A trader at UBS earns $110 per year on average.
Fixed Salary of Traders vs Variable Salary
Bank traders have salaries consisting of a fixed amount and a variable amount. This structure serves as a source of motivation.
Bank Trader Fixed Salary
The stock market is an extremely competitive environment, and traders invest in the markets with money that does not belong to them. Introducing variability makes it possible to establish a correlation between the performance of the trader and his remuneration.
The big banks and investment companies therefore pay their traders first with a fixed salary. The fixed salary of the investment bank trader is primarily a function of the seniority of the trader.
Thus, regardless of their performance, Entry-level traders will have lower salaries than experienced traders. The starting salary for a bank trader is included between 40,000 euros and 50,000 euros per year.
For experienced traders, their salary is included between 60,000 and 100,000 euros per year, although some banks have fixed annual salaries that exceed 200 000 euros.
Bank Trader Variable Salary
That said, the challenge for traders is at the level of bonus, variable part of their income. It is she who often constitutes the most important part of a trader's compensation.
Traders, to be motivated, are assigned profitability objectives on time scales (semi-annual or annual). Achieving these objectives makes it possible to obtain bonuses, which introduce differences in income according to individual performance. On average, the salary of a trader in France is 250,000 euros in bonuses. The best traders can earn up to 1,5 million euros in bonuses, or even 4 to 5 million for the elite.
Capping the Variable Salary of Traders (Bonus) in Europe
Observation of bonus practices among traders shows that in Europe, bonuses for traders are lower than in other areas such as Asia or the United States.
This is due to a regulation that was put in place by the European Union in the aftermath of the 2008 crisis. This last crisis was an opportunity for public opinion to realize the negative impacts of the speculative activity of traders on the real economy, even though this speculation is the source of their significant income.
This is why the bonuses distributed to investment bankers, traders and fund managers have been capped.
The maximum bonus for a trader in the European Union is now capped at double his monthly salary.
The measure was of course not greeted lightly by players in the financial industry. In reaction, Banks have increased traders' fixed salaries to anticipate the effects of the new regulations and avoid too much erosion of traders' income, the primary motivating factor in the profession.
How Much Do Traders Earn by Country or Stock Exchange?
The activity of the trader essentially consists of buying and reselling financial securities. He does this for his own account or for the account of third parties. The purpose of this commercial activity is to generate capital gains by buying at a low price and reselling at a higher price (basic means of realizing capital gains, but not the only one).
Given the fluctuations in prices, the trader must analyze the trends and anticipate them in order to be able to optimize his gains. Financial securities are issued by economic actors (banks, states, companies, etc.), they vary according to stock exchanges and countries.

How to Calculate your Trader Salary?
If you trade on your own account, you certainly do not receive a payslip. You can track your trades, trading account volume, and more. But to have a real idea of what you earn, you must be able to deduce what salary corresponds to the earnings you make.
[wptb id = "25594" not found]To perform a calculation of your trader salary, here are the points to consider:
Trader Salary Calculation: ROI (Return On Investment)
These are sums that you collect in addition to the money that you bet in your trades (amount invested + capital gain). In the medium term, your ROI depends on your strategy, the frequency of your trades, and your use of the levels of leverage authorized by your broker. Leverage can greatly multiply your gains, but also your losses; hence the need to hedge well with stop loss orders, for example.
Trading Salary Calculation: Capital
The independent trader has a capital that he uses to make his traders. It is on this capital that the ROI is applied. If you achieve an ROI of 12% per month and your capital is 1 euros, then you have earned 000 euros per month, or 120 euros per year. It is therefore necessary to have a fairly substantial capital to ensure a decent income, even with fairly profitable strategies.
Trader Salary Calculation: The Costs
Your trading activity is not without costs. Beyond the indirect costs (electricity, internet connection, training, etc.), direct charges reduce your earnings. These are the Commissions, spreads, swaps, and other fees charged by your broker must be deducted from your profits before you can determine what you actually receive.
Trader Salary Calculation: Taxes
All income may be taxed. You must therefore ensure that you are in good standing with the tax authorities by paying the taxes corresponding to your income bracket. In short, subtract the amount of taxes payable from your income.
It should be noted that the calculation can also be done on a yearly basis. Thus, if you are not obliged or wish to withdraw your capital gains directly, you can leave them in account and perhaps reinvest them to increase your capital and your income.
What is a good trader?
Good knowledge of market finance and good strategies are useful, but what distinguishes the good trader from others are the following qualities (especially psychological ones): patience, discipline, experience, self-control (for example , knowing how to remain calm and serene, whatever the evolution of the market).
❓ How to Trade Well?
To trade well, you must first train yourself. Then you have to determine your strategy, your capital, find a good broker / broker, be careful and know how to control yourself in the face of the strong emotions that arise as a result of large gains as well as large losses.
How Do Traders Make Money?
Traders are similar to traders who drive the financial market. They earn money thanks to the capital gain they generate by buying a cheaper security and selling it more expensive (basic tactic). This added value can come directly to them if they are independent traders, or they can expect a salary and bonuses if they are employed traders in a financial institution.
Who is the Best Trader in the World?
Warren Buffet is considered the greatest trader in the world. He is certainly the richest, since he is the 3rd richest person in the world. He is also renowned for his wisdom, which allowed him to escape the bursting of the 2 financial bubbles that were the Internet and the subprime mortgages.
What Studies to Become a Trader?
Several courses can prepare for a career as a trader. The most common is obtaining a master's degree in finance or economics from a major university or business school. This master can be supplemented by a 3rd cycle and/or internships. Also, mathematical profiles such as engineers, computer scientists and other applied mathematics graduates are also found in trading, in particular as a quantitative analyst or "quant", quantitative analyst in French.
